BONIFACIO : Isang Sarsuwela

Had the good fortune to watch `BONIFACIO: Isang Sarsuwela' at SM Sta. Mesa, thanks to Direk Emman De La Cruz, who introduced me to the Director and Writer Atty. Vincent Tanada (who also plays the role of Bonifacio in most of the shows). Vince is a Palanca Awardee, having won first prize in the Dulang Ganap ang Haba (Filipino Full Length play) category with his work “Ang Bangkay.”

Bonifacio: Isang Sarsuwela is a musical performed by the Philippine Stagers Foundation. PHILIPPINE STAGERS FOUNDATION is a fast-rising and critically acclaimed professional theater company duly organized and registered under the laws of the Securities and Exchange Commission.  Founded in 2002 by Atty. Vincent M. Tañada, a lawyer and writer, Jeffrey T. Ambrosio, an interior designer and Hans Christian H. Lim, a professional computer analyst and graphics designer.  The three PSF incorporators saw the necessity of transformation and recuperation of Philippine theater.  But PSF is not just an ordinary performing group.  It is a Foundation with an objective of helping the poor, the sick, the elderly and the forgotten through the medium of theater arts.  At present, the Foundation has more than fifty (50) High School and College Scholars.

The Bonifacio musical is in commemoration of the 150thbirth anniversary of one of the brave heroes of Philippine history—Andres Bonifacio y de Castro (30 November 1863 – 10 May 1897).

After mounting ‘JOE: A Filipino Rock’sical’, Tañada chose to have Bonifacio to be the subject of his latest opus because he has always believed in courage and gallantry as important requisites for heroism. In fact, it is PSF’s most intense production ever to date.

“It is Bonifacio’s extreme love for country that made him sacrifice his life. Such love is the noblest kind of love; it is not personal, but selfless and munificent. How many of the youth of today have appreciated that love for country? How much of ourselves can we magnanimously offer for the good of our country and fellow Filipinos?” - Tañada.

According to him, the main objective of the play is to inspire the audience in living a life of sacrifice.

Also, he mentioned and clarified that the play he is doing may not encourage an overwhelming act of heroism like offering one’s life, but it is a way to at least do something to make other people’s life better. It is helping the forgotten sectors of society; educating and inspiring the youth by means of the arts, visiting the prisoners, the aged, and the sick are good examples of modern Bonifacio deeds.

‘Bonifacio: Isang Sarswela’ opened its Press Preview night on Friday, July 19 at Tanghalang Pasigueño, 6pm with Vincent M. Tañada as Bonifacio. He is ably supported by PSF’s home-grown artists like BWW Philippines awardee Cindy Liper as Gregoria de Jesus, Aliw awardee nominee Jordan Ladra alternates with Kevin Posadas as Emilio Aguinaldo, Monique Azerreda and Adelle Ibarrientos-Lim as Hilaria Aguinaldo with Patrick Adrian Libao as Emilio Jacinto.

Direk Emman De La Cruz thanks the Philstagers for their rivetting performances and their commitment to promoting quality theater productions in the Philippines.
